Bradfield City Centre (Aerotropolis) – Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal Heritage Advice and Master Planning, 2020–25

With Client/Consultancy: Western Parkland City Authority/Extent Heritage

Service areas: Historical archaeology, First Nations cultural heritage, heritage advice.

As Project Director, Madeline led all Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal heritage advice for the Bradfield City Centre (Aerotropolis), one of Australia’s most significant city-building initiatives, centred on a new international airport and its surrounding urban precinct. Over five years, the project involved multidisciplinary heritage reporting and iterative guidance at a regional and precinct scale.

Madeline directed the integration of archaeological and cultural heritage into the master planning process, ensuring heritage considerations were embedded from the outset. Collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary design team, Madeline helped shape the masterplan to align heritage values with urban design, infrastructure, and long-term placemaking outcomes.

The project positioned cultural heritage as a driver of design rather than a constraint, demonstrating how the landscape’s deep-time Aboriginal history and more recent historical layers could inform the identity and development of the Aerotropolis.

Key deliverables included:

  • Opportunities and Constraints Analysis

  • Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment Report (ACHAR)

  • Aboriginal Test Excavation Report (ATER)

  • Statement of Heritage Impact (SOHI)

  • Historical Archaeological Assessment (HAA)

These reports provided a robust evidence base to support planning, approvals, and design decisions, ensuring heritage values were recognised and respected throughout the project.
