Blundells Cottage, built in 1860 and the oldest remaining building in Canberra’s National Triangle, sits on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin and embodies the layered history of our capital. Listed on the Commonwealth Heritage List, it was originally part of the Duntroon Estate and remains a site of significant cultural and historical value.
As Project Director, Madeline led the development of an Interpretation Strategy that positioned Blundells Cottage as a key cultural destination. The project aimed to elevate the site’s profile through enhanced visitor experiences, site activation, and increased public engagement.
Collaborating closely with stakeholders and volunteer staff, Madeline developed a strategy that translated the site’s rich historical fabric, landscape setting, and collections into a cohesive, immersive visitor journey. The approach foregrounded storytelling across deep time to the present, connecting people, place, and landscape at multiple scales.
The strategy recommended a suite of innovative interpretive initiatives, including soundscapes, projections, a signage trail, workshops, public programs, and public art. These elements were designed as an integrated experience, activating the site even when closed or unstaffed, and adaptable to different times of day to encourage repeat visitation.
